  • Ning gives surprisingly smart reasons for why they're shutting down their adult networks: It's actually more of a surprise that they lasted as long as they did; but this week Ning.com, the high-profile "make your own social network" service, announced that they will soon be ending support there for adult-themed ones. But here's the real surprise -- that on their company blog, they state surprisingly smart and argument-proof reasons why they're doing so: not for morality' s sake, but because those groups generate insanely more copyright takedown lawsuits (hence much bigger legal fees for the company), inspire the creation of many more networks devoted to illegal things, and with all that still generate a whole lot less ad revenue than the general-audien ce ones in their system (which is how Ning makes its money, by running ads on all these various networks' pages). It's hard to find fault with this logic, I have to admit; a smart and transparent way to handle the situation, I think, and I applaud the Ning staff for doing so.
